The right temperature
Getting the room temperature right in the nursery is essential to creating a safe sleep environment for your baby, and helping it sleep peacefully through the night.
We have a natural tendency to dress our little ones too hot or use too many covers at bedtime. That’s a risk though, because babies can't really regulate their body temperature. They can quickly get hyperthermia, which occurs when there is an imbalance between the baby’s body temperature and the room temperature. If your baby isn’t able to eliminate heat into the environment, its body temperature rises and hyperthermia occurs.
TOG - Always match baby’s clothing to the nursery temperature.
TOG ratings help parents to choose the right sleeping bag or sleepwear for their little ones. TOG or Thermal Overall Grade is a measure of thermal insulation. The higher the TOG rating, the more effectively a material can trap warm air close to the body. All garments, sleeping bags and duvets have a TOG value.
To discover how to choose the right sleepwear for baby, check out our blog article “TOG ratings and temperature, what do I have to look for?” It includes TOG tables for children of all ages and for every sleeping bag. When the weather is hot, it’s always best to opt for breathable fabrics such as Tencel or airy cotton.

It’s really important to look in on your child regularly and use your hand to check their temperature.
Better safe than sorry. The best places to check if your little one is too hot or cold are on the back of the neck, on the feet or on the hands. They shouldn’t feel to damp or cold.
If you think your baby might by overheating, take off a layer of clothing or use a lighter bed cover. The weight of a blanket or duvet also affects heat regulation. The heavier the cover, the more heat is generated and the less comfortably you sleep. We recommend a well-fitting baby sleeping bag, either on its own or with a thin additional blanket. And a sleeping bag that adjusts to the ambient temperature is just perfect! It gives you the assurance that your baby always has the ideal sleeping temperature.
FAQs about summer products
On warm summer nights, it’s important to dress your baby in light yet comfortable clothing. Choose breathable materials that help regulate temperature and absorb moisture, keeping your baby dry and cool.
Puckababy offers Tencel® pyjamas, especially designed for warm weather. Tencel® is a natural, silky material that regulates warmth and moisture efficiently. It absorbs 50% more moisture than cotton, so your baby won’t overheat.
For higher temperatures, you can choose a sleeping bag with a low TOG value (such as max. 0.5 TOG), or even just a thin pyjama or onesie.
Always check in your baby’s neck area to ensure they’re not too hot. If the skin feels damp or sweaty, you can remove a layer to keep your baby comfortable.
Yes, if it’s very warm, your baby can sleep without a sleeping bag, for example, just in a onesie or diaper. However, a sleeping bag still offers important benefits, especially when it comes to providing a sense of security. Many babies wake up due to their startle reflex, and a sleeping bag helps them stay calm and sleep more deeply. Additionally, a sleeping bag directly protects your baby from mosquito bites.
If you’re unsure, you can start with a sleeping bag and always remove a layer if you notice your baby is too warm. This way, your little one stays cool and comfortable during sleep.

High temperatures make it harder for little ones to fall asleep and stay asleep. Since babies can’t regulate their body temperature well, they can easily overheat or sleep restlessly. This leads to shorter, interrupted naps and more difficulty falling asleep.
