"A baby's skin is not completely developed. It doesn't have the same functions and defense mechanisms as an adult's skin yet. That's why it is more exposed to external influences, and that's why it needs special care and protection."
Prof. Dr. Dirk Hoefer (Director of the Institute for Hygiene and Biotechnology and the Competence Centre for Textiles and Skin at the Hohenstein Institute).
ÖKO-TEX 100 is the leading ecolabel in the world for testing textile for hazardous substances, and it is divided into 4 classes. In general it is true that the more intense the dermal contact is, the more protection the skin needs against hazardous substances.
All Puckababy products are fully ÖKO-TEX 100 Class 1 certified, under number 1302005. This is the highest of the classes, with the strictest safety requirements that can be applied to baby's younger than 3 years old.
The label "Confidence in Textile" tested on hazardous substances according to ÖKO-TEX Standard 100", is used to mark textile products that were subjected to an array of extensive laboratory experiments in authorised and independent test facilities, and that were proven to be safe for people's health. The quality label is only awarded to products that are entirely free of hazardous substances. This includes the fabrics and threads that were used, as well as the metal or plastic accessories, such as zippers.
Examples of a few testing parameters of our articles according to ÖKO-TEX:
formaldehyde, plasticisers, heavy metals
allergenic dispersion colorants, pesticides, organostannic compounds
skin-friendly pH-value, good colour fastness
The ÖKO-TEX tests consist of over 100 different parameters, and go much further than the legal requirements. A lot of baby products do not have this ecolabel. Do check before you purchase. Your child is still very vulnerable. With Puckababy you are making a very conscious choice for quality, and you can be sure that your little one is not exposed to dangerous substances.
All Puckababy products are tested in international laboratories all over the world, compliant with the highest safety requirements that apply to sleeping textiles for babies.
Puckababy works only with the best materials, in order to guarantee safety and quality. All products have been ÖKO-TEX 100 certified by Centexbel under number 1302005.
This means that all the materials we used are free of dangerous substances, and tested according to the strictest standard of Class 1 for babyís younger than 3 years old.
All Puckababy products are made by BSCI approved manufacturers; the whole production chain is structured in a way that is very ethically responsible. Employees rights are guaranteed, the environment and the area are protected and naturally child labour is out of the question!
We recommend you never buy a product for your baby to grow into. This can get in the way of the functionality, but above all the safety. If we look at large groups, regionally and worldwide, the average growth seems to be similar. That is why the sizes of the Puckababy articles are based on the worldwide averages that have been determined for growth curves and clothing sizes.
But not all children are born the same size, and grow the same way. Do you have doubts about what size would be the best for your child? Feel free to ask one of our specialists. They would love to advise you on sizes!
0 to 3 months
Size 44 to 62
2.5 to 5.5 kg
3 to 6 months
Sizes 62 to 74
5.5 kg to 7.5 kg
If you have doubts about the right size, for example if you do not start using the Puckababy until 6/7 weeks, consult our swaddling indicator or feel free to ask us for help! Of course you can also order both models and see how they fit on your baby at home. You can send the model that does not fit back to us, according to the guidelines for returns. You can find these under returns.
Every Puckababy item has a label with washing instructions. Read the instructions on the label carefully before washing. At Puckababy we make our products in a clean environment, after which everything is packed neatly. If your product came in packaging, it is not necessary to wash it before you use it the first time.
For most* of the Puckababy products we recommend a delicate laundry programme of 40 degrees. Tumble-drying in the dryer is not a problem, provided that you keep the temperature low.
For a printed sleeping bag we use different washing instructions. Check 'How should I wash my printed sleeping bag?' for more information.
Please note! Close all zippers and velcro before you wash the product. Always wash the complete product. Attach sleeves before you wash and wash the entire sleeping bag.
* Puckababy Sleeper: remove the little mattress before you wash the product, and close all the zippers. Wash all the components separately and manually and let them air dry.
We use a high quality foil for the name print on our sleeping bags. This foil is also Öko-Tex Standard 100 Class I: free of dangerous substances and specially designed for sleeping textiles for babies.
However, the washing instructions for the print is slightly different from the cotton and microfleece of the sleeping bag itself.
Therefore, we recommend the following washing instructions for the outer bag:
- Wash on max. 40 degrees
- Do not use any aggressive detergent or bleech
- Do not tumble-dry the outer bag, the teddy inner bag can be tumble-dried in the dryer
- Iron the sleeping bag on the inside at low pressure and low temperature
The Puckababy Piep and Mini are made of 100% cotton, and also 100% ÖKO-Tex certified (free of harmful dyes!). The material and the leftover space in the Puckababy ensure beneficial regulation of warmth and fresh air. Because the baby's arms are inside the Puckababy, additional warmth is contained. That is why it is wise to keep an eye on the temperature. This is under influence of, among other things, the temperature of the environment, the bedding and the clothing.
If the head, the neck or the feet feel clammy, you should remove a layer of clothing and/or bedding. Do not use a hat or socks. The warmth of a baby leaves the body mostly via the head and the feet. If you use a hat or socks, the temperature regulation is obstructed unnecessarily. The normal body temperature of a baby is around 37.6 degrees Celsius.

When your baby is around five months old, the uncontrollable reflexes will become focused movements. This is also when the baby will start developing physically again, and try to roll onto his or her belly. Using the Puckababy makes this harder, and will delay the moment of rolling over.
The little zippers in the sleeves of the Mini are there to help with the phaseout (or earlier, in cases of active rolling over). This can be practiced gradually, by guiding the arms through the sleeve openings. If the loose arms still make the baby restless, this indicates that it is too early for your baby to sleep entirely without the Puckababy. You can then switch to the Bag 4 Seasons. Puckababy's 4 Seasons sleeping bag makes sure that the baby does not suddenly feel lost in the big bed or in a sleeping bag that is too spacious and light.
When your baby starts to grab things, pull himself up, roll over, or starts to develop other focused movements. These actions indicate that your baby is more and more in control of the reflexes, meaning that restriction is no longer necessary.
When your baby indicates he does not like the restriction anymore. This often goes hand in hand with the above point.
If the points above are not applicable yet, you should start phasing out when the baby is around five months old.
Guide your childís arms through the sleeve openings. Put your child to bed with loose arms. You will notice that your babyís first sleeps after this are a little strange. This possible unrest has nothing to do with the unrest that made the Puckababy necessary! You have to stick with it for a while, but do not let your baby become upset.
The general experience is that phasing out the Puckababy takes about two days. The Puckababy sleeping bag 4 seasons makes this transition even more gradual, and ensures pleasant sleeps for years.
Start by putting your child to bed with his arms through the sleeve openings every evening. First for 5 minutes, and if that goes well you can extend to 10 minutes, etc. This way he will gradually learn to sleep with his arms loose. And stick to the same pattern as always: for example, put the baby to bed, cover him with a blanket, kiss him and leave. There is a good chance that your child will fall asleep by himself after a couple of days.
If your child falls asleep with his arms loose, but wakes up after a little while, you can put his arms back in the Puckababy at first. But as the periods of sleep become longer, see if he does not go back to sleep by himself.
You can also put your baby to bed with the Puckababy, and take him out of the Puckababy when he is sleeping deeply. You can then see how long he will stay asleep.
Furthermore you can tuck him in tightly with a blanket; crosswise! This way the biggest part of the blanket will be under the mattress and his weight, and it will be harder for him to pull it loose. This way you will still offer him some restriction and safety without Puckababy.
